How to Light a Chanukkia (Menorah)

On the first night of Chanukkah we place the first candle in the Channukia on the right side.  Then we light the Shamash the helper candle.  We say the prayers, and then use the Shamash to light the first candle.

On the second night a second candle is added (on the right, next to the first), and again we light the Shamash, say the prayers, and use the Shamash to light the candles, the left one first. Each night, another candle is added on the right next to the already-placed candles, the Shamash is lit, the prayers are said, and the candles are lit with the Shamash, always from left to right.

For the Shabbat that falls during the week of Chanukkah, light the menorah first.  Then light the Shabbat candles.  There is no special Shabbat blessing over the candles for Chanukkah.   At the end of Shabbat during Chanukkah Saturday night about an hour after sundown on Friday night it is traditional to perform the Havdalah ritual first and then light the Chanukkah candles.  Havdalah is a ceremony that marks the end of Shabbat.  For more information, click here:
