The Four Questions

Mah nish-ta-nah ha-lai-lah ha-zeh mi-kol ha-lei-lot:
Why is this night different from all other nights:

  1. She-be-chol ha-lei-lot a-nu och-lin cha-metz u-ma-tzah, ha-lai-lah ha-zeh ku-lo ma-tzah?

In that, on all other nights, we eat leavened bread (chametz) and matzah; on this night, only matzah?

  2. She-be-chol ha-lei-lot a-nu och-lin she-ar ye-re-kot; ha-lai-lah ha-zeh ma-ror?

In that, on all other nights, we eat other vegetables; on this night, a bitter vegetable (maror)?

  3. She-be-chol ha-lei-lot ein a-nu mat-bi-lin a-fi-lu pa-am eh-chat; ha-lai-lah ha-zeh she-tei fe-a-mim?

In that, on all other nights, we do not dip even once; on this night, twice (greens in salt water, maror in charoset)?

  4. She-be-chol ha-lei-lot a-nu och-lin bein yosh-vin u-vein me-su-bin; ha-lai-lah ha-zeh ku-la-nu me-su-bin?

In that, on all other nights, we eat either sitting upright or reclining; on this night, all of us recline?
