Blessings for Shemini Atzeret


After lighting candles, recite the following blessing:

Hebrew Prayer: Candles
Baruch Atah Adonai Eloheinu Melech Ha-olam, asher kidshanu b'mitzvotav v'tzivanu l'hadlik ner shel Shabbat v'shel Yom Tov.

Blessed are You, Adonai our God, Sovereign of the Universe Who makes us holy
with Your mitzvot and commands us to kindle the lights of the Sabbath and the holiday.



Before drinking wine, recite the following blessing:

Hebrew Prayer: Wine
Baruch Atah Adonai Eloheinu Melech Ha-olam borei p'ri ha-gafen.

Blessed are You, Adonai our God, Sovereign of the Universe,
Who creates the fruit of the vine.



Because Shemini Atzeret is the first night of a holiday, add the following blessing:

The Shehehiyanu
Baruch Atah Adonai Eloheinu Melech Ha-olam,
she-he-cheyanu v'kimanu v'higianu laz'man ha-zeh.


   Blessed are You, Adonai our God, Sovereign of the Universe, Who has granted us life,    Who has sustained us, and Who has enabled us to reach this festive occasion.



Before eating bread, recite the following blessing:

Hebrew Prayer: Bread
Baruch Atah Adonai Eloheinu Melech Ha-olam ha-motzi lechem min ha-aretz.

Praised are You, Adonai our God, Sovereign of the Universe, Who brings forth bread from the earth.


Meals for Shemini Atzeret are eaten in the sukkah, although no blessing is recited.
